Charity digital campaigns June 29th 2012

So, how can you use digital comms & social media to support your charity’s campaigning activities?

Campaigning organisations can find it difficult to stand out from the crowd and to get their message heard. If you work for a small organisation with only a few staff and limited budgets, finding new and innovative ways to communicate with your target audiences is always a challenge!

But that’s where the use of digital marketing and social media can really help you to compete with some of the bigger players. Of course, the use of digital communications and social media has to be considered in the context of an overall strategic approach, whether that’s in relation to fundraising, campaigning, marketing, or service delivery.

Cruelty Free International: A new non-profit using digital & social media to campaign globally

There are an increasing number of charities and non-profits who are integrating digital marketing techniques and social media channels into their work.

I’d like to showcase a new non-profit that is making the most of digital marketing and social media as part of their global campaign to end animal testing for cosmetics products.

Raising awareness of human trafficking: Anya17 January 19th 2012

With only two months until its première on 7th March 2012 in Liverpool, I’d like to spotlight this incredible arts project that I support – a unique, contemporary and highly topical new opera: Anya17.

Composed by ‘British Composer Award’ Winner Adam Gorb to a libretto written by Ben Kaye, Anya17 aims to raise awareness of the secret world of sex trafficking, where up to 800,000 young women and children are trafficked into the EU every year.

Anya17 exposes the intertwined lives of those sold into sexual slavery as they fight to survive.

Anya17 - A unique opera about human trafficking

The opera has its première in Liverpool on 7th March followed by a performance on 9th March at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Why I support Anya17

I first heard about Anya17 when I was developing this charity comms and careers blog with designer Anna Celeste Watson. Anna had just started to talk to Ben Kaye about a website for Anya17 and I was shocked to hear about the living hell that trafficked women and children face every day.

NGO’s estimate that there is likely to be a sex trafficking victim forcibly working in a house or flat just 20 minutes’ drive from your own doorstep, no matter where you live in the UK. Just think about that for a moment. It’s a horrifying thought isn’t it, and one that should make us all want to stand up and do something to end this modern day slavery.

With my charity comms background, I’ve been doing my bit with online promotions and helping to recruit the project’s two digital marketing managers. But there’s much more we can all do to get involved. And here’s why we should come together to fight this despicable trade.

Twitter: are you a digital manager’s nightmare? November 27th 2011

OK, let’s presume that you’ve made your Digital Marketing Manager happy and signed up for a Twitter account. Now what?

I’ve helped clients large and small to integrate Twitter into their planned marketing and comms activities. Just like other communication channels, the key is to decide at the outset if and how it can work for you.

I recently worked with a client who wasn’t yet at the point of needing a social media strategy. She needed a simple walk-through to see how she could use Twitter for her charity HR business and voluntary work. We went right back to basics during the session, so I thought I’d share a few of the points we looked at.

If you’re thinking about using Twitter, or if you’ve had a bit of a go and need some ideas about the next steps, I hope this is food for thought. And feel free to share my ‘27 ways to get more out of twitter‘.
